Group 8 Chapter Three

The Path to the unknown

Owen was shocked by what he had just heard. Death Desert was known to be impossible to cross. Many had tried but no one had ever come back. Could he trust the magician? Or was he getting trapped by someone who could be the one who had tried to kill the King? Owen didn’t know what to think, but he convinced himself that staying in the castle would not have helped his father.

Before arriving in Death Desert, the two men had to walk for days. They went through a village where they couldn’t be seen because everybody knew Owen. For a few seconds, a woman looked at Owen insistently but Cedric said she wouldn’t be a threat. They continued through forests, roads, they even crossed a small river. Owen became nicer to Cedric and started to think that he may be a good man.

Simultaneously, in the castle, everyone was panicking. Rumors that the King had been killed by magic were spreading, and people were wondering where the son of the King was. They had heard that he had been seen in a village not far away, and some people started to say he was a coward for leaving the King without telling anyone. Queen Andrea was now the one looking after the castle and trying to reassure the citizens. But everything was getting completely out of control. Everyone wanted to speak to the Queen but Queen Andrea couldn’t or wouldn’t. The inhabitants feared that she would not be able to replace the King that they all liked. Yara, who was very angry at Owen for not telling her anything, went to talk to the Queen to demand an explanation. Queen Andrea knew she was close to Owen, so she agreed to confer with her.

“Where is Owen? Where did he go? And most importantly why? I know him; he would have told me if something was going on. He would have never left the King alone here after what had happened.”

“What makes you so sure I know where he is?”

“If you didn’t, you would do everything in your power to find him.”

At that moment, Yara thought that the Queen might have planned all of this: the King’s death, the disappearance of Owen. Maybe she did this so that her son could be the only heir to the throne.

“And I am. But I can’t send all our soldiers to find him, because we need protection, someone tried to kill the King.”

“What about the King? Is it true? Is he dead?”

“No, the King is being taken care of. And don’t worry about Owen. I’m sure he’s fine. Now, that is enough with your questions!”

Yara was not happy with the Queen’s answers but she didn’t want to have problems, so she left the room. The Queen then let out a sigh and said, “What am I going to do?”

Owen kept asking Cedric when they were going to arrive but he wouldn’t answer. A few days went by after they had left the castle and Owen was starting to be anxious again. They had just crossed another village when Owen asked Cedric to stop in a restaurant, to have a drink, because no one so far away from the castle would know who he was. Cedric finally said yes and even accepted to stay the night in a hostel. The next morning, Cedric woke Owen up, they needed to go. A few hours after walking through countryside, Cedric turned to Owen.

“Look. We are finally there.”
